Funding For Logistics And Transport Businesses
Fleet, warehouse and working-capital finance for transporters, 3PL operators and last-mile businesses — where costs are paid daily and clients pay quarterly.
How funding works in this sector
Logistics has the sharpest mismatch of any sector on this list. Diesel, tolls, driver wages and maintenance are paid daily or weekly. The client — usually a far larger company — pays in sixty or ninety days, and often only after a proof-of-delivery cycle that adds weeks of its own.
The second issue is what the business owns. A transporter with a fleet has security a lender understands. A 3PL or last-mile operator running on leased vehicles and leased warehouses has very little to pledge, and has to be funded on its contracts and its collections instead.
Where the money gets stuck
- Fuel, tolls, driver wages and maintenance, paid continuously
- Client payment terms, plus the proof-of-delivery and reconciliation cycle before the clock even starts
- Vehicle purchase and replacement, and the down payment each one needs
- Warehouse deposits, racking and fit-out on a leased facility
- Contract mobilisation — hiring, vehicles and space committed before the first invoice
What lenders get wrong, and what we do about it
- An asset-light operator is assessed as if it had no security, when a contracted receivable from a strong client is the real asset
- Fleet value is under-used: vehicles already owned and paid for can be refinanced to release working capital
- Client concentration is judged crudely — one anchor client with a long contract is not the same risk as one client won last quarter
- Contract mobilisation is a defined, time-bound need and should be funded as a term facility rather than squeezed out of the limit
